South Carolina is blessed with gifted writers. To celebrate this gift, a new program, “By the River,” premieres on ETV Thursday, Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. Produced by ETV and USC-Beaufort, the show will feature in-depth conversations with Palmetto State authors and poets set against the backdrop of the Beaufort River.

Producer Carolina Sawyer was amazed by the wealth of writers when she moved to the state a few years ago. Hostess Holly Bound Jackson, said the show will give writers time – full 30 minutes – to stretch out and discuss topics such as where their inspiration comes from and how they became writers. Each show will end with a reading by a South Carolina poet over beautiful scenic images of the river.

Both women said Pat Conroy was a connection that many of the writers had, as many were inspired either by his writing or by his personal encouragement. That’s one goal of the show, said Sawyer, is to inspire the next generation to start writing, or at least, said Jackson, to open a book and enter new worlds through the eyes of South Carolina’s writers.
