The two remaining Republican gubernatorial candidates faced off Wednesday, June 21 at the Newberry Opera House for a debate co-sponsored by SCETV and the Post and Courier. Governor Henry McMaster and businessman John Warren positioned themselves as the experienced politician and the political outsider throughout the night as the top vote earners from June 12’s primary sparred over healthcare, education and statehouse corruption.

McMaster criticized his challenger’s lack of political experience and referenced his own political record throughout the evening, while Warren asserted that his military background and business acumen prepared him for the role. The candidates also tousled over their claims to President Trump, whom they both support. Trump has endorsed McMaster, but Warren still drew parallels between himself and the president as political outsiders.

The runoff between McMaster and Warren will take place Tuesday, June 26, with the winner going on to compete with Democrat James Smith in the general election. You can watch Wednesday's debate in full here.
