Plastic Myths

Plastics are everywhere and misconceptions abound when it comes to the recyclability of these plastics!  While many of us believe that all plastic containers are recycled into new plastic containers, the realityis that most likely, your recycled plastic becomes new secondary products like textiles, parking lot bumpers, or other products that are themselves not recyclable. But every piece of plastic is recyclable because it has the chasing arrows symbol, right?  Not necessarily.  It’s the number inside those arrows that tells you the general class of resin used to make that plastic container and only some of those can be recycled.  With all this misinformation, what’s an eco-conscious person to do?  Use refillable containers and buy in bulk instead of one time use plastic containers.  Look for products with little packaging, or packaging that is recycled and recyclable.
