Food Waste to Compost

Food waste is a major source of trash in America- these uneaten and spoiled portions of meals from our kitchens, cafeterias and restaurants account for 31.6 tons of food waste every year according to the EPA!  Instead of buying and preparing too much food, plan your meals and buy only what you need.  Donate unused canned goods to a food bank.  And start composting food scraps and yard debris.  There are many benefits to starting a compost pile.  First, of course, is that you reduce the amount of trash going into landfills.  Composting, which is nature’s way of recycling organic material into a nutrient rich, soil-like material, is great for your garden, flower beds, and potted plants.  Composted material is a valuable product which can suppress or even eliminate the need for fertilizer and pesticides.
