Sunbelt Ag Expo

Making It Grow logo

The annual Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, Georgia, allows growers to see the most up-to-date farming technology in the country. In addition to acres of exhibits, the organizers also select the Swisher Farmers of the Year for Southeastern states. Keith Allen of the Betty Allen Farms in Latta was chosen as the outstanding farmer representing South Carolina this year. Extension Agent David Dewitt who nominated Allen said he is open to new ideas and technology, embracing the most up-to-date research findings.

Among the changes Allen has made are employing both strip till conservation and when appropriate no till practices that help conserve soil organic in the field, reducing fertilizer and irrigation needs. He loves old farm equipment but is uber up to date with high-tech tractor technology which lets him use the most efficient ways of getting crops into the field.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
