  “M” is for Mabry, George Lawrence, Jr. (1917-1990). Soldier, Medal of Honor Recipient. After graduating from Presbyterian College, Mabry entered the US Army as a 2nd lieutenant. Throughout World War II, he served with the Fourth Division and saw his first combat on D-Day in 1944. By the time his unit had fought the Germans across France, he had earned battlefield promotions to battalion commander. In the fall of 1944 the division was involved in the bloody campaign to take the Huertegen Forest in western Germany. On November 20th, 1944, under heavy enemy fire, Mabry prepared a path through a minefield, disconnected booby traps and led a successful attack on three enemy bunkers. For his heroic actions, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. George Lawrence Mabry, Jr., was the second most-decorated American serviceman of World War II.
