“E” is for Everett, Percival (b. 1956). Author, editor, educator. Born at Fort Gordon, Georgia, Everett was reared in Columbia. Everett drew on his experiences as a young African American growing up in Columbia in his first novel Suder (1983). The novel’s critical success gained him a position at the University of Kentucky. He then taught at several other colleges before becoming Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southern California. He is the author of twenty-five novels, four collections of short stories, and six books of poetry. Though some of his fiction since Suder draws at least partly on southern origins and themes (including his latest novel, James), Percival Everett’s creative work has more generally focused on the American West and more imagined settings such as a postapocalyptic future.
