“D” is for Drayton, John (1766-1822). Governor, jurist, author. Born in South Carolina, Drayton read for the law and was admitted to practice in 1788. While still in his twenties and early thirties, he served as warden of Charleston (1789), a member of the S.C. House of Representatives (1792-1798), lieutenant governor (1798-1800), and governor (1800-1802 and 1810-1812). In 1812 he was appointed a federal judge of the U.S. District Court in South Carolina. Although he had a distinguished political career, Drayton is most remembered for his achievements as a writer and a botanist. His 1802 publication, A View of South Carolina, as Respecting Her Natural and Civil Concerns was translated into several languages and favorably reviewed in Europe. In 1821 John Drayton published, Memoirs of the American Revolution, a two volume work still citred by historians today.
