Controlling Fire Ants

Making It Grow! Minute logo

Hello Gardeners, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. I had a terrible run in with fire ants while in the garden recently and ended up partially “streaking” to get back to the house. Fire ants are not just a nuisance, for some people their stings can be life threatening. We will always have these imported pests in our lives; they can’t be eradicated, but we can control them with minimal impact to other animals in the environment. If you search “Vicky Bertagnolli fire ants YouTube,” you’ll find several presentations about how to keep your yard and garden as fire ant free as possible using bait products – ones that have the ants doing most of the work for you.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
