The Jason Moran Fats Waller Dance Party Swings with a Big Band

Jason Moran brings his Fats Waller Dance Party to the Wells Fargo Jazz Series at Spoleto Festival USA.
Clay Patrick McBride

The Jason Moran Fats Waller Dance Party recalls the sounds of Harlem in the 1920’s with Moran’s innovative take on the music of Fats Waller.

Jason Moran is one of the most inventive jazz pianists working today. He performs with a number of acclaimed groups, such as his trio The Bandwagon. In 2010, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. Moran has taught at the Manhattan School of Music as well as the New England Conservatory of Music. In addition to passing on his skill and knowledge to students, Moran is the Artistic Director for Jazz at the Kennedy Center. Moran is bringing his innovative take on the music of Fats Waller to the Spoleto Festival Jazz series. Wearing a papier-mâché mask of Waller’s head, Moran will lead a full band, recalling the swinging sounds of Harlem in the 1920s. The Jason Moran Fats Waller Dance Party kicks off Saturday, June 4th at 9pm at the College of Charleston Cistern Yard.
