Protecting Curturally and Ecologically Significan Places

Making It Grow logo

Hello Gardeners, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. South Carolina’s Heritage Trust Program has protected over 95,000 acres of land selected for unique ecological features or important cultural significance. Most are open to the public and some allow hunting and fishing. The goal is to protect and share with citizens and visitors to our state the incredible diversity we have in South Carolina. A host of organizations including local land trust organizations, the Nature Conservancy, the Conversation Fund, the Department of Natural Resources (which includes archeology activities as well as plant and animal conservation, and the Endangered Wildlife Fund which you can support through the state income tax check-off.  Generous landowners, too, have and continue to donate important properties which are then managed by DNR staff dedicated to these irreplaceable sites. If you search SC Heritage Trust and then select properties you’ll find all the sites and visiting information.

Amanda McNulty is a Clemson University Extension Horticulture agent and the host of South Carolina ETV’s Making It Grow! gardening program. She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
