The South Carolina Department of Agriculture has a commitment to our major row crop farmers but new programs provide support for niche farmers and entrepreneurs who are finding ways to join in the local foods movement. What an incredible way to find the jams, pickles, lotions, honey products, soaps, cakes, cookies, spices – even South Carolina sea salt aged in bourbon barrels. In the past, our grandmothers and mothers made homemade items for holiday gifts. In today’s hectic times, we may not have the time (or skills) to follow their example, but we can use the South Carolina Specialty Foods catalogue to find the talented members of our State who still carry on these wonderful traditions, often using fruits and vegetables grown on family farms.
