What to Say After a Concert

Has this ever happened to you? You go to a concert, and the concert is... awful.  But the performer is someone you know, and you see that person afterward, and you have to say something.  What can you say?  Well, you can always start by looking the person straight in the eyes and saying, “What can I say?”  And there’s always the classic, “I’ve never heard playing like that.”  But here are some other possibilities:  Boy, that Beethoven!  Boy, what a program!  Boy, you must be starving!  Boy, it’s great to see you again!  You must really love Mozart!  Could you tell how much the audience loved it?  You should have been sitting where I was sitting.  Thanks so much for the tickets!  What a crowd, eh?  For sopranos, you can always depend on, “I love your shoes.”  And my personal favorite, which must be accompanied by a hearty handshake and a direct, sincere look… “Good isn’t the word.”  So… feel free to use any of these, if you should ever need them, but please don’t tell anyone you heard them from me.
