The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office has released the names of a man and woman who died in an extremely hot home over the weekend.

The Coroner’s Office says that 84-year-old Joan Littlejohn and 82-year-old Glennwood Fowler died inside a Woodview Avenue home where the inside temperature had reached 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Littlejohn and Fowler were found Saturday following a police wellness check. Family members reportedly had neither seen nor heard from either since last Wednesday.

According to the police report, the furnace measured 1,000 degrees when emergency crews went into the basement. The unit was so hot that crews at first thought the basement was on fire, although it was not.

According to the report, there was no sign of struggle, foul play, or carbon monoxide poisoning. But the body temperatures of the man and woman were recorded at 106 degrees.

Officials do not know what caused the furnace to burn so hot.
