Hello Gardeners, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. There are lots of myths about spiders – if a spider counts your teeth you’ll die is my favorite one – how would you know a spider counted you teeth? Another is that spiders in the bathtub come up through the drain. Actually, spiders need water and often fall into a tub in search of a drink and the porcelain is too slippery for them to crawl back out. When I find spiders in my tub, I pick them up in my hand, close my fist loosely, and toss them out the door. If you are a little squeamish, just get a glass or cup, put that over the spider and slide a piece of paper underneath. Carry that beneficial creature to the backdoor and release her in the bushes where she’ll eat the insects you don’t want in the garden.
