Lettuce on tomato sandwiches

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. We had tomato sandwiches for supper the other night and Edward searched through the fridge until he found some iceberg lettuce. We’ve been married fifty years and he says that he always puts lettuce on his tomato sandwiches – could have fooled me, maybe not paying attention is the secret to a long marriage. Anyhow, iceberg lettuce because it’s crunchy, like the potato chips John Nelson puts on his tomato sandwiches. A fabulous cook Callie Wienges called them m and m sandwiches, mayonnaise and ‘maters. Now I’m wondering if people add their own special “must haves” to their tomato sandwiches. Tell us your favorite mayonnaise or spread and required additions on Making It Grow’s Facebook page. Yesterday I heard about homemade mayonnaise with orange infused olive oil!! And it used to be so simple, mush bread, mayo, and tomatoes.
