There are references to hickory nut oil being used to treat rheumatisms and other complaints and also used before electricity in oil burning lamps. If you look at how to make hickory nut oil some sources say you need to separate the nuts from the shells and that is a daunting task. But other places say just crack the nuts and boil nuts and shells together. When the mixture cools, the oil will rise to the top. Thank goodness, there are lots of places where you can have this oil shipped to you. I’m waiting for a delivery and am going to make the Italian bread focaccia (easy as you knead it only a minute or so) and it’s usually dipped in olive oil but I’m going to open my hickory nut oil and combine the two cultures.
