“M” is for Michelin

South Carolina from A to Z logo

“M” is for Michelin. Michelin is a French tire-manufacturing giant whose roots extend to the 1860s. This company has production facilities on five continents, including a substantial business presence in South Carolina. Michelin came to the state in the mid-1970s, as a part of its massive campaign to expand its North American market share. Initial investments in facilities in Greenville, Anderson, Laurens, and Spartanburg were in the hundreds of millions of dollars. In the 21st century the company has sixteen plants in the United States and ten in South Carolina. Michelin and South Carolina made a successful match. While its corporate culture was in line with South Carolina traditions, local workers welcomed Michelin’s high wages and impressive benefits. I 1985, Michelin moved its U.S. headquarters from New York to Greenville.
