"B" is for Bowles, Crandall Close

"B" is for Bowles, Crandall Close [b. 1947]. Businesswoman. After earning earned a degree in economics from Wellesley College and an MBA from Columbia University, Bowles began her career at Morgan Stanley in New York. She later also received became a financial analyst for Springs Industries and executive vice president and president of Springs Company, the Close family’s investment management firm. She also received extensive training by serving posts in corporate planning, textile manufacturing, and bath products for Springs Industries before becoming it president and chief operating officer in 1997. A year later she was named chair and CEO of Springs Industries. Bowles was the fifth generation to run Springs Industries. In 2006 Springs Industries merged with a Brazilian firm and Crandall Close Bowles became co-chairman and co-CEO of the new corporation until her retirement in 2007.

Dr. Edgar received his B.A. degree from Davidson College in 1965 and his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1969. After two years in the army (including a tour of duty in Vietnam), he returned to USC as a post-doctoral fellow of the National Archives, assigned to the Papers of Henry Laurens.
