“M” is for Medical University of South Carolina

“M” is for Medical University of South Carolina. At the request of the Medical Society of South Carolina, the General Assembly established the Medical College of South Carolina in 1823. State ownership of the school was attained in 1914. Women were first accepted as medical students in 1895. Pharmacy and nursing programs were instituted in the 1880s. An allied health program in medical terminology began in the 1920s. A School of Dental Medicine was approved in 1953, but not funded until 1967. The School of Applied Health Sciences was created in 1966. In 1969, the college combined all the school programs into six colleges to become the Medical University of South Carolina. The Medical University of South Carolina is widely acknowledged as a major academic health care center, maintaining its commitment to health sciences education, research, and patient care.
