“H” is for Hollis, Lawrence Peter (1883-1978)

“H” is for Hollis, Lawrence Peter (1883-1978). Educator, social worker. Born in Chester County, Hollis graduated from South Carolina College. In 1911, while employed with the Young Men’s Christian Association, he became director of welfare activities for the Moneghan Mill and Parker Cotton Mills in Greenville County. In this role he organized mill communities to create a school district of elementary and secondary schools, “Dr. Pete,” as he was affectionally known, merged his belief in progressive education with the vocational needs of the community. Hollis is widely recognized for bringing the sport of basketball to South Carolina, organizing the first Boy Scout troop in the state, and developing an adult education “People’s College” for mill community residents. A charismatic and influential educator, Lawrence Peter Hollis served as superintendent of the Parker School District from 1923 to 1955.

After two years in the army (including a tour of duty in Vietnam), he returned to USC as a post-doctoral fellow of the National Archives, assigned to the Papers of Henry Laurens.
