For South Carolina Public Radio, I'm Dr. Rénard Harris with the College of Charleston. This is Teachable Moments, a minute of education for students and parents.
My colleague Margaret Haygood, director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the College, says summer brain drain can be avoided with a simple tech detox.
Set limits on technology and show kids that reading is part of everyday life by pointing out reading opportunities like recipes, road signs, and grocery lists. Encourage kids to keep their math skills sharp by practicing real world problems, like calculating change on a lemonade stand.
Instead of overscheduling to reduce brain drain, allow kids the time and space to overcome boredom on their own. This can lead to creative and educational experiences.
