U.S. Customs and Border Protection says its officers intercepted a shipment containing 10th century artifacts in Louisville. The items were on their way from Mexico to a residence in South Carolina when they were seized July 24. The collection included a skull and 12 chopping tools. An expert determined that the pieces dated back to the Post-classical and Aztec eras, from 1100-1532. Most countries have laws that protect cultural property, including export controls and national ownership of the items. The agency says importers must have permits when bringing such items into the country. Cultural property has been seized 21 times since the start of the 2020 fiscal year.
