Students in obstetrics-gynecology and family medicine are facing tough choices about where to advance their training in a landscape where legal access to abortion varies from state to state. Abortion training generally involves observing and assisting in the procedure. Many doctors and students now worry about nonexistent or subpar training in states where abortion laws were tightened after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Scientists say they have confirmed the first three cases of the omicron coronavirus variant in South Carolina. Officials with the Medical University of South Carolina said Wednesday that the identified cases were all in the state's Lowcountry region. Scientists reported the earliest sample was collected Dec. 4, meaning the variant has been in the state for at least a couple weeks.

A test used to screen medical products for bacteria has a crucial ingredient — the milky blue blood of the horseshoe crab. The blood is bled from hundreds of thousands of the creatures each year. Ninety percent of them make it back to the sea as a renewable resource. Much of this work happens in South Carolina, where Gov. Henry McMaster says the industry is vital to the development of a domestic medical supply chain. The Food and Drug Administration has been asked to approve a synthetic alternative.
