  • Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace has won reelection in South Carolina, beating Democrat Annie Andrews to keep her 1st Congressional district seat under GOP control. The district representing Charleston and neighboring rural counties had seesawed in recent years between Democrats and Republicans. Mace previously won a contested Republican primary that became a referendum of sorts on former President Donald Trump's influence after he endorsed her primary opponent. Also Tuesday, Republican Russel Fry won South Carolina's 7th House seat over Democrat Daryl Scott. With Trump's backing, Fry had ousted veteran GOP Congressman Tom Rice in a June primary.
  • Republican Rep. Nancy Mace is seeking to retain her Charleston-area congressional seat in Tuesday's election. That South Carolina district has seesawed in recent years between Democrats and the GOP. The freshman congresswoman Mace faces Democratic challenger Annie Andrews, a pediatrician. Democrat Joe Cunningham — who is now running for governor — won the seat in 2018 before losing to Mace the following election. In the state's 7th Congressional District, state GOP representative Russel Fry faces Democratic challenger Daryl Scott in Tuesday's vote.
  • Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina is getting a reelection boost from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. The California Republican is appearing with Mace this week for a fundraiser in Charleston. Mace's campaign says the diverse array of political figures showcases her broad appeal as she runs for her second House term. Maces faces Democrat Annie Andrews in the Nov. 8 general election.
  • U.S. Rep. Tom Rice of South Carolina has been ousted from Congress in his Republican primary after voting to impeach Donald Trump over the Jan. 6 insurrection. He is the first of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump to lose a reelection bid.
  • Two Republican U.S. House incumbents in South Carolina who have drawn the ire of former President Donald Trump now find themselves facing tough primary challenges on Tuesday from candidates he has endorsed.
  • Republican Katie Arrington's suspended security clearance is becoming an issue in her primary campaign against incumbent South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace. Arrington says Mace is mischaracterizing a dispute that resulted in her departure from a job at the Pentagon. Arrington says her security clearance was suspended in 2021 when officials accused her of an improper disclosure of classified information. Arrington says she did nothing wrong, a contention backed up in an affidavit from the officer who gave her intelligence briefings. The dispute is likely to surface at a debate between the two on Monday. The primary is June 14.
  • Congresswoman Nancy Mace of South Carolina has released the first ad of her Republican primary campaign, touting her support for one of former President Donald Trump's signature projects: finishing the wall at the border with Mexico. The 30-second ad takes President Joe Biden to task for mandating that American soldiers and Border Patrol agents be vaccinated against COVID-19, while she says he's "opening our borders to thousands of unvaccinated illegal immigrants." Trump is backing one of Mace's primary opponents after she made television appearances blaming him for the Jan. 6 insurrection. Mace said she raised about $1 million after Trump endorsed former state Rep. Katie Arrington.
  • Two lifelong Republicans representing neighboring congressional districts in South Carolina are unlikely players in the fierce debate over the future of their party. Reps. Nancy Mace and Tom Rice are both facing spirited primary challenges from rivals backed by former President Donald Trump. For Rice, the sin was his support for Trump's second impeachment after the violent Jan. 6 insurrection ignited by the then-president. Mace drew the ire of Trump and his backers by voting to certify President Joe Biden's win in the 2020 election. Trump held a rally Saturday in Florence, South Carolina, with their primary challengers and laced into both as insufficiently loyal.
