A new report by a state watchdog agency finds that South Carolina's utilities prepared to withstand winter storms like the one that buckled Texas' power grid last year. The final report was released at the end of December by the Office of Regulatory Staff and studied 65 electric and gas utilities across the state. Gov. Henry McMaster requested the review following a deadly storm in Texas in February 2021 that crushed the state's power grid and left millions of people without heat for days.

Forecasters' predictions of debilitating snow and ice as far south as Georgia have shoppers scouring store shelves for storm supplies and road crews trying to prevent a repeat of past wintertime debacles. The National Weather Service says from 2 inches to 5 inches of snow could fall as far south as northeast Georgia from Saturday evening though Sunday. Expected power outages and travel problems will be made all the worse by an additional coating of ice. Stores are already stripped clean of food and other items in some areas, and trucks are getting ready to treat roads with a mixture of salt and water to prevent freezing.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the Upstate and portions of the Midlands and Pee Dee ahead of a storm that will sweep through the Mid-Atlantic this weekend. Periods of heavy snow, freezing rain, and wintry mix are all expected from the system which should arrive Saturday night and linger through late Sunday.
