Homemade Laundry Detergent

If you’ve got a large family, then you know that laundry can pile up quickly and detergents are only getting more expensive.  You could try skipping detergent all together and let your machine do the scrubbing for you.  Or you couldmake your own detergentfor a fraction of the price you pay for store bought brands.

You’ll need a bar of soap, half a cup of baking soda, one cup of borax, and three gallons and four cups of water.  Start by bringing the four cups of water to a boil, then shred the bar soap with a cheese grater and boil until dissolved.  Pour the three gallons of water into a bucket (or a recycled detergent jug) and add the soapy water, borax, and baking soda and stir until thick.  You’ll use about a quarter cup per load.
