"W" is for Wallace, David Duncan (1874-1951). Historian. Born in Columbia, Wallace earned a B.A. and an M.A. from Wofford and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt. He left a dual legacy for the study of South Carolina history. As a professor of history and economics for more than four decades at Wofford, he challenged hundreds of students to love history and to value citizenship. As a writer, Wallace’s magnum opus, the multi-volume History of South Carolina, was the premiere history of the state for more than six decades after its publication in 1935. In addition to the History of South Carolina, he published six others, related in some fashion to the Palmetto State. Although trained in the nineteenth century scientific school of history, David Duncan Wallace believed that “all history should be written to be read.”
