Convicted murder and disbarred attorney Alex Murdaugh is expected to plead guilty next month in Charleston to federal charges he stole millions of dollars from former clients.
Court records show the 55-year-old has a hearing Sept. 21 to change his plea. He pleaded guilty in May to a 22-count indictment that includes money laundering as well as wire and bank fraud. At the time, his attorneys said his plea would likely change and the matter would be quickly settled out of court. No word if a plea agreement has been reached.
Prosecutors say Murdaugh stole millions in settlement money from clients like the family of Gloria Satterfield, his longtime housekeeper who died after a reported fall at his home. The friend accused of helping him, Cory Fleming, plead guilty this month and was sentenced to four years in prison.
Murdaugh is already serving time in an undisclosed state prison for the murders of his wife and son in June of 2021. He was convicted of the killings in March after prosecutors argued the murders were meant to be a distraction from a decade long financial crime spree that was about to be exposed.
Murdaugh’s attorneys are appealing the conviction in which he was sentenced to life behind bars. The federal charges carry between 20 to 30 years in prison. A guilty plea likely means Murdaugh would remain in prison even if his appeal is successful.
He also faces roughly 100 similar state charges.
