"L" is for Lutheran Theologoical Southern Seminary [LTSS]. One of eight seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, LTSS was established by German Lutherans in 1830. In Columbia since 1911, LTSS previously occupied several sites in South Carolina and Virginia. In preparing "men and women for the public ministries of the church," the seminary offers three graduate degrees in theology; the master of divinity degree for those preparing for the ordained ministry; the master of arts in religion for those preparing for some other professional work in the church or further graduate study; and the master of arts in sacred theology for pastors and other professionals engaged in the Christian ministry. The majority of the students at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary come from the Southeast and return to serve churches in the region.
