“H” is for Hammond, LeRoy (1728-1790). Planter, entrepreneur, soldier. A native Virginian, Hammond moved to Augusta, Georgia in 1765 where he became a successful merchant and operated a ferry across the Savannah River. He purchased six hundred acres in South Carolina where he grew tobacco. He served in the Cherokee War where he distinguished himself in a fight near Seneca Town. With the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Hammond volunteered for military service. Later he fought at the Battle of Stono, the siege of Ninety Six, and the Battle of Eutaw Springs. In 1781 General Nathanael Greene assigned his regiment to defend patriot areas against Loyalist incursions. During and after his military service, LeRoy Hammond represented Ninety Six District in the First and Second Provincial Congresses and in the Third through Seventh General Assemblies.
