U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan says the refugee situation in Sudan's Darfur region remains a great concern. Annan has accused the Sudanese government of doing little to stop attacks on civilians in Darfur by armed Arab militias, known as the Janjaweed.
Former U.S. Marine Capt. Brian Stiedle says he witnessed firsthand atrocities in Sudan. As one of three U.S. military advisers to the African Union team monitoring Darfur, Stiedle also photographed much of what he saw there. Since his return from Africa, Stiedle has met with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and members of Congress to discuss what he witnessed in Darfur.
It's estimated that tens of thousands of civilians have died violently in the past two years. Millions more have been forced from their homes. And this week, the United Nations said another 180,000 have died from disease and starvation in Darfur in the past year and a half.
