SCDHEC Fish Smart Eat Smart

Fish is a high protein, low calorie meat packed full of healthy omega acids.  Nutritionists agree that fish is a healthy part of your balanced diet and with all the water in and around South Carolina, catching your own dinner can be a fun and inexpensive way to spend some time this weekend.  But before you head out with the fishing pole and bait, be sure to check South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s website to see what fishing advisories may be in place in your area.  Emissions and greenhouse gasses can cause high levels of mercury, PCB’s and Radioisotopes in fish, and this may not be healthy for you or your family.  DHEC’s Fish Smart Eat Smart program can help keep you up to date on which fish species are safe to eat and which ones you should avoid in the rivers, lakes and shoreline of South Carolina.
