Testing scheduled for Lake Murray Dam's emergency siren system

Duke Energy’s Bad Creek pumped storage facility in Oconee County acts as the largest battery on the Duke Energy system – providing clean power at peak times by discharging water into Lake Jocassee and then pumping water back into a reservoir when demand for electricity is much lower. State lawmakers are encouraging Duke to expand the facility in order to meet growing demands for electricity in the state.

Dominion Energy will conduct the annual test of its Lake Murray Dam inundation sirens on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

Dominion Energy is alerting the public to its annual test of Lake Murray Dam's emergency siren system. Testing is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. and will last for about three minutes.

Testing is conducted every January. The inundation system includes 10 rotating sirens near the Saluda River in Richland and Lexington counties.

Should an actual emergency occur at the Lake Murray dam and its backup dam, the sirens would alert the public to tune in to local radio or television stations for information.

The company also conducts a monthly, one-minute test of these sirens at Lake Murray in compliance with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
