The Certified SC Cafeteria will benefit students across the state by providing access to more locally grown produce while investing in the economic vitality of participating farmers.

A new state-funded program is nourishing young minds while supporting local farmers. Coordinated by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, Certified SC Cafeteria will bring more locally grown food into public school cafeterias across the state.

Participating schools and school districts will be reimbursed for buying SC grown vegetables, fruits, grains and honey, with additional incentives for those that source the highest percentage of local food.

To date, a total of 67 school districts and schools have signed on for the program. This represents 874 school cafeterias that serve nearly 540,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Certified SC Cafeteria is funded through a $1 million annual investment from the South Carolina General Assembly. Additional support is provided by the state's Department of Education.

The investment also provides opportunities for students to learn about nutrition and agriculture and connect with local farmers.

Additional information, plus resources for teachers, farmers and staff, can be found by visiting the Certified SC Cafeteria website.
