The National Weather Service says there is a high risk for rip currents through Wednesday evening.

Beachgoers visiting the state's Lowcountry coast are advised of a high risk for rip currents through Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the advisory for Cape Romain, Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Folly Beach and Kiawah Island.

A high risk means life-threatening rip currents are likely in the surf zone of those areas. The surf height Wednesday is expected at two to three feet, according to the NWS.

Rips currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from the shore. The NWS cautions swimmers to follow the advice of local beach patrols and be mindful of flag warnings.
