A horse drawn carriage halted traffic on part of Charleston’s peninsula Friday as it made its way from Broad Street to the Second Presbyterian Church carrying the casket of long-time attorney Gedney Howe lll.
Born in Charleston, Howe is remembered as a legal giant who took on high-profile cases, like the 1990 FBI corruption sting known as “Operation Lost Trust” in which more than a dozen lawmakers were indicted. Only Howe’s client escaped conviction in what has been called one the biggest political scandals in state history.
Howe represented the state senate twice in reapportionment lawsuits and was remembered Thursday at the statehouse by Sen. Ronnie Sabb as “an incredible individual who just happened to be a lawyer.”
Howe also won one of the largest settlements of its kind in South Carolina when he took on a personal injury lawsuit after a longshoreman was crushed by a shipping container.
And these are just a few of the cases for which he's known.
Howe came by his profession naturally, following in his father’s footsteps. Gedney Howe Jr. enjoyed a 60-year legal career in which he also served as a solicitor.
Gedney Howe lll died last Friday at the age of 78.
