South Carolina’s annual back-to-school sales tax-free weekend returns next month.

This year, shoppers can take advantage of the sales on Aug. 1–3.

The weekend, known as the "sales tax holiday," means customers can buy eligible items without having to pay the state's 6% sales tax and other applicable local taxes.

Shoppers can buy school supplies, clothing and footwear, technology and computers and select bed and bath items sales tax free, according to the state Department of Revenue.

That applies to in-store and online purchases and includes new and used items.

For retailers, the revenue department said all sales of eligible tax-free items during the tax-free weekend need to be reported and taken as a deduction on August sales tax returns, due Sept. 20.

Tax-free weekend in South Carolina started in 2000, and shoppers have since saved more than $1.3 million in state sales tax, according to the Department of Revenue.

Last year, more than $22.3 million worth of tax-free items were bought during the tax-free weekend.

Shoppers can find a detailed list of specific tax exempt and non-tax-exempt items here.
