Gamecock great Steve Taneyhill dies at 52

The prized South Carolina quarterback led the Gamecocks to the program's first bowl victory in the 1995 Carquest Bowl.

Steve Taneyhill, the boisterous, record-setting University of South Carolina quarterback from 1992-1995, died Sunday at the age of 52. A cause has not been released.

The Altoona, PA native started four seasons with the Gamecocks leading the team in passing all four season with 753 completions and 62 passing touchdowns. Taneyhill was known for his iconic mullet hair and "home run swing" after touchdown passes.

Taneyhill led the Gamecocks to the program's first bowl victory in the 1995 Carquest Bowl against West Virginia.

Taneyhill was inducted into the University of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. He was also was named Freshman of the Year by Sports Illustrated and Football News Freshman All-America in 1992.

As a high school coach, Taneyhill led Chesterfield High School to the South Carolina state championship three straight seasons, 2007-2009. His team was state runners-up in 2006.

Additionally, Taneyhill purchased and operated businesses in Columbia and Spartanburg.

Funeral arrangements are not yet finalized.
