Jonathan Felkel, 34, is accused of verbally threatening and firing a gun toward his Black neighbor.

The Columbia man accused of a hate crime targeted at his Black neighbor waived his right to a detention hearing in federal court Tuesday and will remain in custody.

Jonathan Felkel, 34, was indicted in July by a federal grand jury with violating the housing rights of his neighbor, Jarvis McKenzie.

According to court documents, Felkel fired his gun and made threatening comments toward McKenzie during the early morning hours of July 17, while Felkel was driving into the gated community where they both lived.

The exchange was captured on security video.

If convicted, Felkel faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on the housing charge, and an additional 10 years in prison on the firearms charge.

The FBI Columbia Field Office and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case.
