The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has a new chairman.
Max Metcalf of Greenville was elected to the position during a Thursday SCDOT meeting in Columbia. This comes after he was appointed as vice-chairman in 2024.
Metcalf, a Clemson University alum, is the Manager of Government and Community Relations at BMW Manufacturing. Prior to that role, he served as Director of Transportation and Intergovernmental Relations in the Office of Governor Carroll A. Campbell, Jr.
The role, which leads the nine member commission representing each congressional district, was previously held by T.J. Johnson of Charleston.
Following his appointment, Metcalf said, “I’m honored to be elected Chairman of the SCDOT Commission and grateful for the trust my fellow commissioners have placed in me,” said Metcalf. “Our state’s transportation system is the backbone of South Carolina’s economy and quality of life. Together, we’ll continue building momentum to connect people, support jobs, and strengthen our state for generations to come.”
