American Red Cross SC facing major blood shortage

File

The organization has announced its blood supply is down 35%.

Leaders with the American Red Red Cross in South Carolina say the nation is facing a major blood shortage.

On Tuesday, the organization released a statement saying its blood supply dropped 35 percent. They say the shortage is especially serious for platelets, types O, A negative and B negative blood.

Red Cross leaders cite the recent spike in flu activity as a major driver for the shortage. They urge anyone who can to donate blood or platelets.

In it's statement, the American Red Cross says South Carolinians who donate blood by Sunday, Jan. 25, will be automatically entered for a chance to win a trip for two to the Super Bowl.

To book an appointment to give blood or platelet, go online or call 1-800-733-2767.
