Hurricane Preparedness Month begins today in South Carolina. State and local emergency management officials are urging everyone to plan ahead and stay informed.
The South Carolina Emergency Management Division stresses preparation is essential no matter where you live in the state. While coastal communities and low-lying areas often receive the greatest impacts from hurricanes and tropical storms, effects can be felt far inland with power outages, fallen trees, tornadoes and flooding.
Steps to stay ahead of a storm are:
Know your zone
Evacuation decisions in South Carolina are based on designated zones along the coast. Those can be found in the 2026 South Carolina Hurricane Guide or online at hurricane.sc.
Prepare your home
Inspect your roof, clean your gutters, and review your insurance coverage. Take photos and make a list of your belongings for documentation so you’re prepared if damage occurs.
Remember your route
Identify your nearest hurricane evacuation route before the season begins. During an evacuation, remember to follow guidance from local authorities and blue hurricane evacuation signs throughout the state.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.
