The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged Makiah Long, 22, of Aynor in the death of an Horry County toddler. Long is in jail at the J. Rueben Long Detention Center.
A SLED arrest warrant shows the two-year-old died on March 20 due to blunt force trauma. The child was taken to the McLeod Florence Hospital on March 17 with large bruising on the forehead and additional bruising on the face and body.
The warrant goes on to read that family members said the child was acting normal on the morning of the incident and wasn't injured. Long said the children had been placed to sleep on a couch before she left for a short time. Investigators say the toddler never woke up and report Long provided inconsistent statements about what caused the large hematoma on the child's forehead.
Long is charged with homicide by child abuse and two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child. Additional information about the case and arrest warrants can be found on the SLED website.
