'M' is from McClennan, Alonzo Clifton (1855-1912)

"M" is from McClennan, Alonzo Clifton (1855 to 1912). Physician hospital administrator, a native of Columbia. McClennan was the second African-American admitted to the US Naval Academy. After several unpleasant incidents, he transferred first to the University of South Carolina and then to Howard University. He received medical and pharmacy degrees from Howard. In 1884, he moved to Charleston where he established a medical practice and opened the first African-American owned pharmacy in 1896. Seeing the need to train black nurses, he mobilized black and white Charlestonians to support the creation of the hospital and training school for nurses. McClennan served as director and surgeon in charge from 1898 to 1900. Alonzo Clifton McClennan. Edited the Hospital Herald. A journal designed to assist in the professional training of nurses and the promotion of domestic and public hygiene.

Dr. Edgar received his B.A. degree from Davidson College in 1965 and his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1969. After two years in the army (including a tour of duty in Vietnam), he returned to USC as a post-doctoral fellow of the National Archives, assigned to the Papers of Henry Laurens.
