Fixer Upper Home

We’ve all seen those remodeling shows on TV, but before you purchase a fixer upper house with plans to renovate, there are a few questions you should ask yourself.  First, will you have the budget to renovate after investing in and putting a down payment on the property? Keep in mind that no matter how well you plan, there will always be unexpected expenses.  Second, do you have the time to invest in fixing up your home?  Fixer uppers require a lot of time and they can disrupt your routine, so plan on spending most weekends and a lot of free time on renovations.  You should consider whether the property has structural damage before you commit as these problems can mean major money.  A better option is to look for a house that just needs cosmetic fixes- things that won’t cost a lot of money and won’t require a lot of contractors.  And keep realistic expectations!  The people on TV are professionals!
