Storm Water Smarts 1

Have you ever thought about where rainwater goes and what it may pick up along the way?  Think about it; rain water works its way from your roof, through the gutter, down the driveway and into the lawn where it may pick up pet waste, fertilizer or pesticides, then moves through the street where it can pick up oil, trash, and other pollutants.  While it’s tempting to think that it then visits a wastewater treatment plant, the truth is that most rain water flows directly into streams and rivers that then dump into lakes and eventually the ocean.  Polluted rain water can cause the quality of water to deteriorate quickly and can cause closures of recreation areas and popular fishing spots.  The solution to this problem can start in your own back yard!  Tune in tomorrow when we’ll discuss things you can do to keep rain water drainage clean.
