Storm Water Smarts 2

We discussed yesterday how rain water can become contaminated on its way to rivers, lakes, and the ocean.  So what can you do to help ensure that thequality of water in your area remains pure?  Start in your own backyard by picking up pet waste.  The Humane Society estimates that there are 77 million owned pets in the US.  If one of them belongs to you, pick up pet waste at home and on walks to keep potentially harmful bacteria out of the water supply.  Next, slow rain water drainage and keep the water on your property by directing gutter exhaust pipes to your lawn and away from driveways and sidewalks.  And finally use less in the way of fertilizers and pesticides on your lawn and garden.  When you do apply these types of products, check the weather and avoid days when rain is in the forecast.
