Sunny Day Eye Protection

Earthsense

So you know that you should wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun, but let’s talk about how to protect your eyes from the sun and why you should wear sunglasses.  UV damage in the eyes adds up over time, so the sooner you start protecting your peepers, the better.

Children should start the habit of wearing sunglasses early on.  Try to find sunglasses that block 100% of the UVA and UVB rays the sun emits.  By doing so, you could reduce the risk of uveal cancer, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration.   Protecting your eyes is especially important during the summer months when the sun’s rays are more intense, but water and snow intensify light as well so sun damage can happen any time of the year.  And don’t be fooled by clouds; the sun’s rays can pass through haze and thin clouds.  You only get two eyes, so protect them!
