The South Carolina Department of Public Health announced Tuesday that nine more people have gotten sick with measles in the Upstate, bringing the total number of illnesses in the current outbreak to 135.

Nine more people are sick with measles in the Upstate, according to an update released by the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) Tuesday.

The additional illnesses bring the total number of cases in the current outbreak to 135. In all, 138 people have gotten sick in the state this year.

All of the new cases are from previously known exposures. DPH also reports that 168 people are currently quarantining, and one person is in isolation.

Additionally, DPH has identified public exposures at another school in the area: Berry Shoals Elementary.

State health officials urge those who may have been exposed to contact their healthcare provider before seeking treatment to lessen the risk of public exposures in medical offices.

A person with measles is contagious from four days before the rash appears through four days after its onset, meaning people with mild symptoms can spread measles before they know they have the disease.

Other important information about measles and the latest on the current Upstate outbreak can be found on the DPH website.
